I Love a Mystery

- Letter to John Broussard from Ann Parker

"Thank you for the review. I was pleased to see you enjoyed SILVER LIES. Your review really captured the "feel" of the times, the places, and the characters I was trying to create for the reader. The cover, ah the cover. Therein lies a tale. I will say, right here, that I actually did have a lot to do with deciding the cover. As in: "If you want cover ideas, there’s this great photo of Leadville. In winter. Around the 1880s." After I read your comment, I scurried around, looking up references, muttering "No…it CAN’T be…" All I found were references such as "taken in the 1880s," and "1885." I finally went to the source, The Colorado Historical Society, where the negative resides. I gave them the negative number, described the photo, and asked them to check what date was attached and to call me back. Sure enough, they found the photo, and on it "circa 1880s." So, I guess there is room to wonder. And ponder. And discuss. And I think this whole business actually makes a great point about "primary sources" and who do you trust when you’re looking for the truth (whether about the date of an old photo or the worth of a silver claim or the financial stability of a company). Hmmm. I think I can use this in my talks."
