This week at the Quincy Public Library the favorite book is Silver Lies by Ann Parker. Set in 1879 in Leadville, Colorado, Parker paints a vivid picture of life in a silver boom town. Miners, bankers, immigrants, and regular folks are all trying to get rich quick, one way or another, off the silver found in the Rocky Mountains. Inez Stannert is one of the townspeople simply trying to make a living and run a clean saloon. Respected by the miners and tolerated by the upright citizens, Inez does what she can for the town. When a friend of hers is brutally murdered outside her saloon, Inez becomes determined to find Joe’s killer and do right by his family. Counterfeiting, forgery, robbery, and blackmail schemes all come light during Inez’s search for the truth. Parker, whose ancestors lived in Leadville at the turn of the century, has written an excellent first novel sure to be a hit.
